Recovering from surgery is serious business! While you might be eager to get back to your normal activities, it’s important to understand and follow your post-op instructions so that the recovery process is as smooth as possible. Knowing what to expect can reduce stress and alleviate worry. Here at MN Surgery, we’ve compiled some of our top frequently asked questions about post-operative care to help ease your mind. Let’s take a look at these commonly asked questions – but don’t hesitate to reach out if something isn’t clear; we’re here for you every step of the way!

When can I go back to work?

It largely depends on the type of procedure you had. Your physical restrictions will be listed on the post-op instructions given to you before you left the hospital or surgery center. It’s important to rest after surgery and pushing yourself to do things your body is not ready for can lengthen the healing process. Listen to your body and follow the advice of your medical team before jumping back into work!

What should I do if I have pain post-op?

No one wants to experience pain after surgery, but it happens. Fortunately, post-op pain management is relatively straightforward. Your doctor will likely recommend over-the-counter pain medication but will reserve the option for something stronger if needed. It’s important to let your doctor know if your pain is uncontrollable or you cannot get relief from the medications provided post-op.

Is it normal to feel nauseous post-op?

Nausea and vomiting is fairly common after surgery. In fact, nausea affects about 30% of all post-op patients. Nausea may occur for a variety of reasons including reactions to pain medications or from anesthesia, and should not persist beyond 24 hours following surgery. Be sure to discuss any concerns you may have with your medical team before your procedure so that appropriate preventative measures can be put in place.
