Frequently Asked Questions About Outpatient Surgery Answered

When having surgery, many patients would prefer to not stay in the hospital. So naturally, many patients have questions about their options. Often, patients are not familiar with what Outpatient, also referred to as same-day Surgery, means or includes. We’ve compiled a list of our frequently asked questions on the topic for you.

What is outpatient surgery?

Most people think that having surgery requires a hospital stay but did you know that some surgeries can be done as an outpatient procedure? Same-day surgery, is a type of surgery that can be done at a surgery center or hospital and allows you to go home soon after to recover comfortably at home.

How does my surgeon decide if I can have a same-day surgery?

Outpatient surgery can be a great option for many medical procedures, but not all patients are candidates. Your medical history and the recommendations of the surgeon and anesthesia team determine if your surgery can be performed as an outpatient procedure. Our main goal is to keep you safe while getting you back to what you love.

Will I need a ride home after same-day surgery?

Yes, you will need someone to take you home after your surgery. Most same-day surgeries require some sort of anesthesia or sedation. It will make you sleepy and your judgment may be impaired for up to 24 hours after your surgery. It’s a good idea to have someone stay with you until you feel you’re back to normal.
